Bells are Ringing

The NCC Theatre and Dance Department present the musical Bells are Ringing, which will be performed March 12 through March 14 and March 18 through 21 at the Mainstage Theatre. Written by Betty Comden and Adolph Green with music by Jule Styne, this charming musical is set before the time of answering machines and advanced technology. In it, Ella works as an operator at her cousin Sue’s telephone answering service, taking messages and getting involved in her customers’ lives. She even falls in love with a writer whom she’s never met. In the meantime, Sue’s boyfriend is running an illegal bookmaking ring out of the Susanswerphone office right under her nose. Performances at NCC will be at 8 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays; 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturdays; 3 p.m. only on Sundays. Tickets are $15; $12 seniors over 55; $7 children under 18. Under the direction of George V. Special Workshop for Breast Cancer Patients

A free workshop, Nutrition and Breast Cancer: Sorting Fact from Fiction, is offered to those who have had breast cancer from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The workshop is sponsored by the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. Jessica Iannotta, RD, will discuss how diet is related to breast cancer. She will explore foods and nutrients that have received attention in the media and help sort through this often confusing information. Participants will find out how to interpret food labels, discover new tips to plan meals and learn the latest information that will help to promote overall good health and control weight. The workshop, open only to those who have had breast cancer, will be held at Adelphi University’s Alumni House, 154 Cambridge Ave. Preregistration is required. Call 877-4325.

LI Women’s Agenda

Blood Drive

Nassau Community College, in conjunction with Nassau University Medical Center, invites the community to make blood donations during its annual spring blood drive, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the College Center Building. Make an appointment to give blood by calling Barbara Vollmer or Professor Friedman at 572-7883, or just stop in. The donation process takes less than an hour and refreshments will be served to participants. Sponsored by the Phi Theta Kappa honor society and the Engineering Society of Nassau Community College. Blood donors must be at least 17 years old and in good health, bring photo identification. Although small snacks will be provided, we ask that donors eat before donating.

LI Open Web Application Security Projects

The Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) is a 501c3 not-for-profit worldwide charitable organization focused on improving the security of application software. The mission of the organization is to make application security visible, so that people and organizations can make informed decisions about true application security risks. • March 15: Sapphire speaks on Precious at 2 p.m. Author of the novel Push, poet and writer Sapphire discusses how this critically-acclaimed work became the hit movie Precious. Push won the Book of the Month Club Stephen Crane Award for First Fiction and the Black Caucus of the American Library Association’s First Novelist Award. It was named by the Village Voice as one of the top 25 books of 1996 and by Timeout New York as one of the top ten books of that year. It was also nominated for an NAACP Image Award in the category of Outstanding Literary Work of Fiction.

• March 17: Nina Totenberg: “The Supreme Court, Women’s Choices and the Law.” Totenberg, the National Public Radio legal affairs correspondent who disclosed sexual harassment charges against Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas, speaks on women’s issues and the new Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. 11 a.m. Seating is limited and priority seating will be given to NCC students.

Play Golf With Len Berman

Mill Neck Family’s fourth annual Spring Swing Invitational Golf Tournament will be held at the North Hills Country Club in Manhasset on May 24. Sportscaster and author Len Berman will join the event, where he’ll play golf and speak at the Champions Dinner. Entries are limited to the first 25 men’s, ladies’ or mixed foursomes. All golfers will receive an autographed copy of Berman’s new book The Greatest Moments in Sports. Additional copies will be available for purchase. For an entry fee of $350 per person, guests will enjoy delicious brunch, golf challenges and food and refreshments on the 7th, 10th and 12th holes of the course. •Anxiety and Depression Group, a free self-help group for anxiety, panic disorder, depression, OCD and other nervous fears now meets every Thursdays at 8 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church, corner of Chester Ave. and New Hyde Park Rd. Through the Recovery International process, members learn to manage stress, panic, anxiety, depression, anger, irrational fears, phobias, compulsions, obsessions and other emotional or behavioral problems. Members also learn how to face and manage psychosomatic symptoms such as heart palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, sweats, fatigue, headaches, numbness, chest pressure and sleep problems. All group leaders are trained lay volunteers who have experienced some type of difficulty with an emotional problem and practice the Recovery International method of self-help. •Zonta Club of LI, member of Zonta International, a worldwide service organization with a local club. Members help advance the status of women and are involved in many community service activities. The name Zonta is word taken from the Sioux and stands for honesty, trust, inspiration and the ability to work together for service and understanding.
