Olga Marcinik
Olga Marcinik, 96, the late member of the Staryk family of Hicksville, died on March 4, 2010 after years of disability.
The family had operated a 10-acre dairy farm near Burns Avenue in Hicksville, and a 25-acre farm near Pidgeon Hill Road., Huntington. The two farms had more than 100 cows, a processing plant, a dairy store and some 40 delivery trucks. Its customers included homes, restaurants, stores, etc.
Olga’s mother had inherited the farm from her family. Olga’s family included her parents, Mary and Michael Staryk. He had worked as a carpenter in Bayside, Queens, where Olga and her two brothers were born.
She grew up in Hicksville and graduated from Hicksville High School in 1926. Her first job was in a store owned by an interior decorator. Thereafter, she managed the family dairy store in Hicksville.
Later, she married a co-worker, Michael Marcinik, and had two children, Michael III and Mary Ellen.
After a bitter milk strike in 1968, the family sold off the assets and closed down operations.
Olga took a job with the Jericho post office as a window clerk. She retired in 1978. Thereafter, she did charity work of different kinds, and kept up her attendance at St. Ignatius Loyola Parish. When she was 90, she received weekly Holy Communion in her home and was visited by parish priests frequently. She said, “I don’t know why God has kept me alive for so long. I am the last member of my family and all my friends in the neighborhood have passed on.”
