2010 Hawk Cheerleading Annual Award Ceremony

The Farmingdale Hawk cheerleaders held their annual award ceremony at the Milleridge Inn last month. It was a time for the younger girls to celebrate, as the 6-year-olds received their championship trophies, and a time to reminisce for the 13-year-old graduating seniors, who in keeping with an almost 50 year tradition, received graduation plaques from the organization in thanks for their hard work and dedication through the years.

This year’s outgoing seniors, many of whom will go on to cheer at Farmingdale High School and coach in the Hawks, are Christa Aimetti, Jen Castrogiovanni, Christine Dentato, Briana Foran, Briana Hegarty, Lydia Kuchmak, Kristina Matulj, Paula Morales, Ailise Schendorf, Gia Villante, Lauren Wynne and Diana Prendergast, who was presented with the Doris White Award, given annually to a graduating Hawk senior in memory of founding member Doris White, in recognition of her years of service to the Hawks, academic performance and athletic ability.

While some girls choose to cheer only at football games, others compete in cheer and dance competitions against neighboring towns during the year. The competition is fierce and the girls and their families dedicate a lot of time and effort to the sport. The girls are rewarded with the lessons of working hard for a goal and teamwork. Specialist trophies are awarded to girls for most improved as well as best supporting, base, flyer and gymnast. This year’s Little Miss Cheerleaders were Ava Diciero, Danielle Mangieri, Alyssa Argila and Sarah Mangieri for their respective teams.

In keeping with tradition, FHS cheer coordinator Rose Celentano was on hand to present an award named in her honor for her years of service and dedication to both the Hawks and Farmingdale High School. The award is given to an FHS senior who has demonstrated outstanding character during her years as a Hawk and Daler. Kacey Warmingham was presented with the 2009 award.

From coaches to team mothers, it takes many volunteers to run a program. While the Hawks appreciate the efforts of all, Liz Barbieri’s contributions were recognized with the Woman of the Year Award for 2009.

Hawk registrations for boys and girls ages 5-13 will be held Thursday, March 25 at the Summit, April 16 and 17 at Allen Park and can be done on-line at farmingdalehawks.org. All 5 and 6-year-olds are free for 2010 and first time Hawks pay half price and there are discounts for families registering more than one child.
