Ackerman Receives Perfect Grade on Protecting the Environment
U.S. Rep. Gary Ackerman has received a 100 percent rating from the League of Conservation Voters, one of the nation’s leading environmental advocacy organizations.
Ackerman received the top score in the group’s 2009 National Environmental Scorecard, the yardstick used to rate members of Congress on environmental, public health and energy issues.
“I am honored to be awarded the highest rating from the League of Conservation Voters” said Ackerman. “Protecting the environment is critical throughout our nation but particularly important in Queens and Long Island where we have so many natural treasures such as the Long Island Sound, precious wetlands and the many outstanding parks, beaches and wooded trails. A healthy environment is critical to our economy and our quality of life. We must do all we can to preserve our natural resources.”
The recently released 2009 scorecard rates Representatives on 13 House votes that include such issues as clean energy, public lands, water and wildlife conservation. Senators are scored on 11 similar votes.
“Once again, New York ranks among the top congressional delegations in the nation when it comes to fighting for a clean energy future and a healthier environment,” said Marcia Bystryn, president of the New York League of Conservation Voters. “We applaud those who scored well.”
The League of Conservation Voters is a nonprofit organization. For 30 years, its environmental scorecard has been the nationally accepted yardstick used to rate the commitment members of Congress make on the environment.
