Concert for Haitian Relief

The Haitian earthquake nightmare continues. Although the media focus has shifted, the need for help in the recovery effort remains. The Church-in-the-Garden, Clinton Rd. and Osborne Ave., remains committed to this effort and will hold a Concert for Haitian relief beginning at 2 p.m. Donations will be appreciated while you enjoy the various music styles of musicians from several area churches. Refreshments will be available for purchase. Listen to the music and listen to your heart.

Spring Break Video Game Design Workshop

Hofstra University, Hempstead, Summer Camps will host a special Video Game Design workshop for students in grades 4 to 12 during spring break, March 29 to April 1, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The program fee is $399 and includes lunch and a recreation period. The workshop offers a fun, week-long sampler of Video Game Development – including 3D computer modeling and animation, and music and sound design – taking place in Hofstra’s state-of-the-art computer lab facilities. Free Breast Cancer Support Groups

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program in Garden City is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however pre registration is required. For information, questions, or to sign up, call Sandi Kafenbaum 877-4314 or the Breast Cancer Hotline at 800-877-8077. All groups meet at Adelphi University School of Social Work. The following groups are offered:

• Women with Breast Cancer. An evening group will meet weekly on Mondays for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m., tentatively beginning on April 5.

• Single Women.An evening group will meet weekly on Tuesdays for eight weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m., tentatively beginning May 4.

• Women with Metastatic Breast Cancer. A daytime group will meet weekly on Tuesdays for eight weeks from 1:30 3 p.m., tentatively beginning on April 6.

•Women with Breast Cancer. A daytime group will meet weekly on Wednesdays for eight weeks from 10:30 a.m. to noon, tentatively beginning or April 14.

• Young Women with Breast Cancer. A daytime group will meet weekly on Mondays for eight weeks from noon to 1:30 p.m., tentatively beginning on April 12.

• Close Knit Group, a Knit and Talk Group for Women with Breast Cancer. An ongoing group meets monthly on Tuesdays from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month.

• Now forming – an evening group for Spouses/partners of Women with Breast Cancer.

At Nassau Community College

•The Center for Catholic Studies at NCC is celebrating 10 years of providing quality programs in the area of Catholic Studies to the college and the community by presenting an event in the College Center Building on March 27 at 1:30 p.m. Bishop William Murphy of the Diocese of Rockville Centre will offer opening remarks. Dr. Joseph Varacalli, the center’s director and founder, will present plaques for distinguished service rendered to the center. Honored will be the Society of Mary: Meribah Province (the Marianists); NCC Academic Associate Vice President Dr. James F. Polo; and the late NCC Administrative Associate Vice President Daniel Keahon. At 2 p.m., Dr. William Thierfelder will speak on the topic of Sports in Contemporary American Civilization: A Catholic Critique. Ongoing Event

Easter Bunny at Roosevelt Field

Spring is in the air and Garden City-area families can get in bloom with a visit to the Easter Bunny at Roosevelt Field. The floppy-eared friend will greet guests in North Court through April 3. Families can pick up spring coloring sheets and valuable coupons from Oriental Trading Company. Roosevelt Field is adding to the excitement by providing free inflatable eggs for kids to color.

•Anxiety and Depression Group, a free self-help group for anxiety, panic disorder, depression, OCD and other nervous fears now meets every Thursdays at 8 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church, corner of Chester Ave. and New Hyde Park Rd. Through the Recovery International process, members learn to manage stress, panic, anxiety, depression, anger, irrational fears, phobias, compulsions, obsessions and other emotional or behavioral problems. Members also learn how to face and manage psychosomatic symptoms such as heart palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, sweats, fatigue, headaches, numbness, chest pressure and sleep problems. All group leaders are trained lay volunteers who have experienced some type of difficulty with an emotional problem and practice the Recovery International method of self-help. •Zonta Club of LI, member of Zonta International, a worldwide service organization with a local club. Members help advance the status of women and are involved in many community service activities. The name Zonta is word taken from the Sioux and stands for honesty, trust, inspiration and the ability to work together for service and understanding.
