Anniversary of Apollo 13 Commemoration
On April 11, 1970, the crew of Apollo 13 launched into space hoping to become the third mission to land on the moon. Two days into the mission there was an explosion and the phrase, “Houston, we have a problem” was heard around the world. The Grumman built Lunar Module Aquarius served as a lifeboat for the astronauts, Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert and ultimately enabled the crew to return to earth. The Cradle of Aviation Museum, Charles Lindbergh Blvd., Garden City, will celebrate the contributions made by Long Islanders at Grumman with a special weekend schedule of events on April 24 and 25. The Saturday activities will include a special screening of the IMAX version of the film Apollo 13, followed by dinner and a panel discussion with Apollo 13 Astronaut Fred Haise and former Grumman President Joe Gavin, who was in charge of the Apollo program. On Sunday, there will be two screenings of the Apollo 13 film (admission $8:50 adults; $6:50 children) at 2 and 4:30 p.m. along with a variety of family activities.

Conductor Salvatore Di Vittorio celebrates spring with the Adelphi Symphony Orchestra and New Zealand-born pianist Henry Wong Doe in one of Mozart’s most enduring concertos, No. 21 in C Major, K. 467. He will offer an engaging performance with his uniquely captivating style. Conductor Di Vittorio will also lead the Orchestra in Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, and Brahms’ Symphony No. 2, sometimes called his “pastoral” symphony. 8 p.m. in the Concert Hall at Adelphi University.

Crystal Ball
The 12th Annual Diabetes Research Institute Foundation’s Crystal Ball will be held at the Garden City Hotel, 45 Seventh St. The ball has been responsible for contributing millions to the DRI’s effort to find a cure. Peter and Michele Bongiorno will be serving as this year’s honorees, while the DRI’s Norma Sue Kenyon, Ph.D., will be receiving the 2010 Gillin Family Humanitarian Award. Michele and Peter Bongiorno have dedicated themselves to the search for a cure. They created the Children’s Best Hope for a Cure Dinner after their daughter, Lauren was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 7. Dr. Kenyon has concentrated her work in the area of transplant immunology. Tickets are $375 per person and can be purchased by calling the DRI Foundation 822-1700. First Social Media Camp for LI

Creative Cups
The life-affirming art/fundraising event of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, is returning and people are invited to participate by creating an “art bra” to be auctioned off. Last year’s event brought in over 200 Creative Cups, ordinary bras that were transformed into works of art. They were created by artists, art students, children, breast cancer survivors and their friends and family members. Submitted creations must be received by Aug. 2, to be included in the auction/gala (March 15, 2011 at Adelphi University). Those wishing to create a bra are encouraged to sign up early, as entrants will be limited to 200. Creative Cups celebrates the lives of those living with breast cancer and those we have lost to this terrible disease. Through the Recovery International process, members learn to manage stress, panic, anxiety, depression, anger, irrational fears, phobias, compulsions, obsessions and other emotional or behavioral problems. Members also learn how to face and manage psychosomatic symptoms such as heart palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, sweats, fatigue, headaches, numbness, chest pressure and sleep problems. All group leaders are trained lay volunteers who have experienced some type of difficulty with an emotional problem and practice the Recovery International method of self-help. •Zonta Club of LI, member of Zonta International, a worldwide service organization with a local club. Members help advance the status of women and are involved in many community service activities. The name Zonta is word taken from the Sioux and stands for honesty, trust, inspiration and the ability to work together for service and understanding. At meetings members discuss and learn about issues facing women, develop and conduct fun fundraising that benefits community programs and network with Zonta International programs.
