Last Saturday, May 22, we attended the second meeting held by Saratoga Associates on the Muttontown Preserve. Years ago, when life was slower, we used to walk in the Muttontown Preserve and remember an old dead tree that we were told was valuable in that owls like to nest in their interiors.
One cold afternoon we walked there and heard an unforgettable noise – it was freezing out and the wind was making the trees bang into each other. They made a hollow drumming sound.
Nature has wonderful surprises for us if we just take some time to listen and observe. We are truly lucky to have the preserve close by. It was great to be reminded of all that is there as interested people provided information for Saratoga Associates.
We learned a great deal about the area – we never knew there was a miniature Williamsburg Village on the Nassau Hall site. Actually, Nassau Hall is an area we hadn’t visited without an invitation, when the Oyster Bay Historical Society and the Theodore Roosevelt Association used it for an event. They were a tenant on the third floor of the house.
Editorially speaking – it was fascinating to be a part (as a local East Norwich resident) with the planning process for the Muttontown Preserve. There will soon be a planning process for the Audrey Avenue Extension which we look forward to attending. It is very empowering to get the community together to decide on its future. It truly puts people on the same page.
P.S. The Town of Oyster Bay said they are still accepting your comments about their proposed improvements to Theodore Roosevelt Park.
