Vacation Misadventures
We are now in the vacation season.
Somehow, not everything goes smoothly and free from trouble when we are on holiday. This story, that I will unfold, happened in the Scottish Highlands.
We had come from Glasgow and Loch Ness (we never managed to see Nessie, the monster of the lake.). The highlands were verdant and lush green. The Royal Family take their relaxation trips to Balmoral Castle in the Highlands.
The hotel was a converted Scottish castle, and the town had a charm that only the friendly and dour Scots could impart. We were a group of four, the Gary Greenes and the Stanley Greenbergs, two dentists and their wives on holiday.
We were informed that this village was the birthplace of the famous author, Robert Louis Stevenson, of Kidnapped, Treasure Island, and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The four of us set out on a trek to find his home. We wandered through the village and before long, we found it.
It was a modest house, but it had a bright, shiny brass plaque to the right of the door, explaining all the facts of Stevenson’s life. Gary, who had just received a movie camera with sound, stood outside the house while the rest of us entered the home. We were surprised that there was no fee or entrance cost to this historical site.
It appeared to be a cozy house as we walked through the first floor. Our first clue that something was wrong was when we spied raincoats hanging on hooks and galoshes in a box on the floor.
The realization was slow in arriving. People are living in this house!
This was not the ancestral home of Robert Louis Stevenson, but a “lived-in” family dwelling. We were intruders! We hurried to the front door before we were discovered and arrested for trespassing.
As we hurried out of the house, there was Gary with his sound camera, capturing the three villains on film. On hurrying away, we all laughed at our misadventure and were thankful that we three culprits were not captured by Scotland Yard.
