Healthy Hempstead 5K Run and Walk-A-Thon

The event is set to begin at 9 a.m. with the five-kilometer (3.1 miles) run and walk. All proceeds from this event will go toward the Hempstead High School Scholarship Fund. The race will begin in the parking lot of the Rosa Parks Hempstead Transit Center, between Jackson St. and W. Columbia St. After the race, there will be a health fair from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. To participate you must preregister by June 18 to avoid long lines the day of the race. The registration fee is $15 in advance: $20 day of the race. On-site registration will run from 8 to 9 a.m. on June 19. Free Workshop for Breast Cancer Patients

Fashion Solutions: Embracing Your Sense of Style. Learn to use fashion to balance any breast asymmetry following breast cancer treatments. Whether they have undergone a lumpectomy, mastectomy, radiation or even reconstructive surgery, participants will be taught ways to use draping techniques and how to identify the best silhouettes for their body types. The Nassau Community College Center for Catholic Studies invites the community to a two-day conference called Catholic Social Thought, Social Science and Social Policy: III. The conference, which will consist of 15 different presentations, will take place on June 25 beginning at 7 p.m. and June 26 beginning at 8:45 a.m. in the College Center Building, Garden City. Among the presentations offered will be those on “Catholic Secondary and Elementary School Education,” “The Regensburg Address of Pope Benedict XVI,” “A Catholic Reflection on the Environment” and “Catholic Critiques of Evolutionary Biology and Psychology and Systems and Exchange Theories.” Presenters include Monsignor Robert Batule, Dr. Marie George, Piero Tozzi, Esq., and Adrian Calderone, Esq. Free Workshop for Breast Cancer Patients

Guided Imagery and Meditation. The power of the mind to influence the body is quite remarkable. The imagination can be directed to relieve pain, speed healing, create calm and stimulate body changes. Free Breast Cancer Support Groups

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however preregistration is required. All groups meet at the Adelphi University School of Social Work. For information or to sign up, call Sandi Kafenbaum 877-4314 or the Breast Cancer Hotline 800-877-8077:

•For Women Newly Diagnosed with Breast Cancer. An evening group will meet weekly for eight weeks on Mondays from 7 to 8:30 pm, tentatively beginning on June 21.

•For Women with Breast Cancer. A daytime group will meet weekly for eight weeks on Mondays from 1:30 to 3 p.m., tentatively beginning on June 21.

•Young Women with Breast Cancer. An evening group will meet weekly for eight weeks on Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m., tentatively beginning on June 22.

For Women with Metastatic Breast Cancer. An afternoon group will meet weekly for eight weeks on Tuesdays from 1:30 to 3 pm.

•The Close Knit Group, a support and handicraft group (knitting, crocheting and/or sewing) for women with breast cancer. This daytime group meets monthly on Tuesdays from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on July 13 and Aug. 3.


Ongoing Event

Creative Cups

The life-affirming art/fundraising event of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, is returning and people are invited to participate by creating an “art bra” to be auctioned off. Last year’s event brought in over 200 Creative Cups, ordinary bras that were transformed into works of art. They were created by artists, art students, children, breast cancer survivors and their friends and family members. Submitted creations must be received by Aug. 2, to be included in the auction/gala (March 15, 2011 at Adelphi University). Those wishing to create a bra are encouraged to sign up early, as entrants will be limited to 200. Creative Cups celebrates the lives of those living with breast cancer and those we have lost to this terrible disease. •Anxiety and Depression Group, a free self-help group for anxiety, panic disorder, depression, OCD and other nervous fears now meets every Thursdays at 8 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church, corner of Chester Ave. and New Hyde Park Rd. Through the Recovery International process, members learn to manage stress, panic, anxiety, depression, anger, irrational fears, phobias, compulsions, obsessions and other emotional or behavioral problems. Members also learn how to face and manage psychosomatic symptoms such as heart palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, sweats, fatigue, headaches, numbness, chest pressure and sleep problems. All group leaders are trained lay volunteers who have experienced some type of difficulty with an emotional problem and practice the Recovery International method of self-help. •Zonta Club of LI, member of Zonta International, a worldwide service organization with a local club. Members help advance the status of women and are involved in many community service activities. The name Zonta is word taken from the Sioux and stands for honesty, trust, inspiration and the ability to work together for service and understanding. At meetings members discuss and learn about issues facing women, develop and conduct fun fundraising that benefits community programs and network with Zonta International programs.
