Just a few hours after one of the worst storms to hit the area in years, the Herricks High School Graduation was held, as planned, in perfect weather on the football field and in full view of the glorious new Herricks track.
The ceremony was perfect as the sun streamed down on Herricks Superintendent Dr. John Bierwirth, Principal Dr. Jane Modoono as they gave their very brief but meaningful graduation words of thought.
School board president Richard Buckley, as is the tradition, introduced Dr. Sanjay Jain, because his daughter was graduating, who then gave the remarks from the school board.
Guest speaker, chosen by the students, this year was Herricks Studies teacher John McManus, who said to the grads, “Each of you should identify who you are and I did that long ago when I decided that I was a nerd.”
He said he always studied, always went straight home from any sport he played, to study and never would “hang-out” with the group.
All three speeches, one by the Salutatorian Amrita Chawla, another by Class President Emily Miller and the last by Valedictorian Yesha Maniar, were filled with both sadness at leaving and optimism and enthusiasm for the future.
