Brendan Rainey Knows Oyster Bay So Does George Albro!
Brendan Rainey of East Norwich called to identify the June 17 mystery picture. “It’s the fish hatchery,” he said. Brendan has seen the trout in the ponds there.
Billy Minicozzi guessed it was a boardwalk, or possibly at a church in Oyster Bay. He added “Good Luck to Tiger Woods in U.S. Open in California.”
Pierre Brandt, well known wood-carver called to say, “The mystery picture is the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery!” He ended with, “Enjoy the summer!”
Diane Lundergaard of the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery and Aquarium called to identify the picture. (It was actually a photo she sent to the Enterprise Pilot.) She explained it showed the “warm water pond where the fish: coi, carp and catfish swim around. On the left is the turtle pond and above, in the center is where the turtles lay eggs. In the background is an original Fairchild building that houses offices and the aquarium.”
Jim Kempster of Oyster Bay Insurance called to say it was the fish hatchery.
Caroline DuBois also cheerfully identified the location adding that the fish hatchery is on Route 25A, on the Nassau Suffolk County Line, where there is “The trout hatchery and turtle pool. The building in back has the gift shop and aquarium with salamanders, frogs, turtles and snakes. It’s a wonderful place to go into, to spend a little time, and to entertain children as well as grownups.”
Jessica Craft emailed a beautiful graphic with a butterfly attached to say, “I believe that it is the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery.”
A later email arrived saying, “It’s the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery! We take our kids there a few times a year! Britney, Morisa and Emma love it,” said Christopher Benny and Jessica Craft. More information is always welcome. Happy summer to the kiddies.
George Adami made an interesting guess, that it was near the Beech Brook Senior Center that his mother attends – off the walk way on West Main Street. That was an interesting answer since Palma Douglas is sending us photographs of the recent dedication of the bridge at Beech Brook. We are looking forward to see the picture.
June 24 Mystery Picture
The June 24 mystery picture was more daunting to solve. Billy Minicozzi guessed it was inside the new deli on Perry Avenue in Bayville. Jane Jackson guessed it was inside the Mason’s Lodge where they have mugs at their bar. (It was a good guess and we wonder if we have a photo somewhere of that location.) George Adami guessed the picture was of the beer stein collection at Canterbury Ales, which is another good try.
George Albro called with the correct answer. “It’s taken at the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club bar. I worked there for 32 years so that’s how I know,” he said.
Ann Marie Fallek, of Southlake, Texas called and recognized the picture as the bar at Seawahaka Corinthian Yacht Club. She added, when we called to get the spelling of her name correct, “I read you on the internet. I know the picture because my husband and I had a wedding reception there. He was a member of the club.”
So once again, you have all done very well, as Mr. Grace says on the famous British sitcom Are You Being Served? The mystery is again a bit behind because of short deadlines this week. The mystery editor was under the weather but is improving. Next week there will be more fascinating comments about this wonderful area of the world. And, speaking of mystery pictures – did you see Audrey Avenue decked out with market umbrellas in a recent episode of Royal Pains the TV series; as well as a picture of the Sagamore Yacht Club – all gussied up by the TV crew.
