West Nile Virus
On Tuesday of this past week, the village activated its Swiftreach Notification System (reverse “911”) via land line telephones to all residences and businesses within the Village of Garden City advising of the Nassau County Health Department’s plan to conduct aerial spraying for the West Nile Virus over Garden City on either Wednesday or Thursday evenings.
As I have previously discussed in this column, residents are encouraged to take the following precautions to reduce the risk of the West Nile Virus.
– Dispose of tin cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots or similar water-holding containers.
– Make sure roof gutters drain properly and clean clogged gutters in the spring and fall.
– Remove leaf debris from yards and gardens.
– Turn over wading pools and wheelbarrows when not in use.
– Change the water in birdbaths twice weekly.
– Clean vegetation and debris from the edges of ponds.
– Use landscaping to eliminate standing water that collects on your property.
Local Law — Solicitations
The village’s solicitation law prohibits all unwanted commercial solicitations and distributions on all private residential property in the village and prohibits non-commercial solicitations and distributions on private property to the extent desired by the resident. This law was designed to protect residents from unwanted invasions of their privacy.
Any resident requesting not to be solicited should complete a “Notice of Objection” form at the Village Hall. Presently, the board has authorized certain groups to solicit door-to-door in the village. As of this writing, the only groups that have permission to solicit are the New York Youth Club and Neighborhood Network Action, Inc.
The New York Youth Club has permission to solicit on Saturday, Aug. 28, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Neighborhood Network Action, Inc. has a permission to solicit from July 19 through Oct. 30, Monday through Friday from 4 to 8 p.m.; and on Saturdays, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with invited callbacks only Monday to Friday, from 8 to 9 p.m.
Board of Trustees Summer Meeting Schedule – Public Hearings
During August, the board of trustees will meet in the boardroom at Village Hall. The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on Thursday, Aug. 19 at 8 p.m. There will be a public hearing at that meeting regarding the St. Paul’s School Demolition for Open Space Draft Environmental Impact Statement. Persons wishing to speak on the DEIS will be asked to register and limit remarks to three minutes.
