Barking Against Drunk Driving

Come for an Event in the Park benefiting Reflection Counseling Center of Plainview, a not-for-profit substance abuse agency. Dogs and people welcome. The event will take place at Blydenburgh County Park, Smithtown. 10 a.m. Registration for Dog Walk. 11 a.m. Dog Walk. Scenic 1 mile escorted on-leash trail walk. Noon Registration for Dog Costume Contest. 1 p.m. Dog Costume Contest and Pet Parade. Come out for clowns, food, raffles, dogs, fun. Shop at the many vendorʼs tables. Every dollar raised will support Reflection Counseling Center’s mission to provide programs and services to help rebuild lives and aid in the fight to end the thousands of senseless deaths caused by drugs and drunk driving. A $10 Charitable Donation will be collected at the event entrance.

1880 Halloween

Old Bethpage Village Restoration, Round Swamp Rd., Old Bethpage, will celebrate a traditional Halloween as it would have been enjoyed by LI families in the late 19th century. An “1880 Halloween” will take place on Oct. 23, 24, 30, 31, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The program incorporates a broad range of family-friendly activities, including the reading of Irish and American ghost stories and tales from the local “grave digger,” carving jack-o’-lanterns, participating in a 19th-century “monster hunt” in the village and touring the “haunted habitats” during the “ghost walk.” Visitors will be able to enjoy a magic lantern show that makes use of a 19th-century lantern and beautiful and humorous hand-painted antique lantern slides. Anat Hoffman Event

Temple Chaverim, 1050 Washington Ave., welcomes Anat Hoffman, executive director of the Israel Religious Action Center and Founding Member of Women of the Wall, to speak on “The Search for Cracks in the City of Stone: The Struggle for Equal Rights in Modern Jerusalem” from 9 to 11a.m. This program is open to the community ($5 members; $8 nonmembers). Lung Cancer Walk

Hosted by CancerCare at the Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course, 1 Southwoods, Woodbury. Check-in 8 a.m. Opening ceremony 9:15 a.m. Ribbon cutting 9:30 a.m. New York Islander Bobby Nystrom, this year’s honorary chairman, along with Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto will be on hand to cheer on the walkers in this approximately 5-mile walk through the golf course. •Family Support Group, an ongoing support group for those who have family members or other loved ones with mental illness. Meets on Mondays from 7 to 8 p.m. at Central Nassau Guidance & Counseling Services, 950 South Oyster Bay Rd. The fee is $5 per family. •POB Senior Citizen Club meeting from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays in the All-Purpose Room at the Jamaica Avenue School, 85 Jamaica Ave. For information call 937-6424. The club offers trips, cruises, parties, social and line dancing, art courses for all levels, craft classes, card games, bingo, horseracing, yoga, education programs, etc. Members must be 60 years or older, residing in the POB S.D. are eligible. •Introduction to Chemotherapy, a monthly information session for cancer patients who are beginning chemotherapy treatments. Family members are welcome. Refreshments served. Nurses with special training, dietitians and other professionals present information that can help individuals understand, and cope with, the effects of chemotherapy treatments. There is also an opportunity to share information with others who may have been through similar situations.
