Registration for Session Two Children’s Tennis Begins
The Recreation Department will offer tennis lessons to children, ages 4 to 18, at the Community Park Tennis Center. The lesson program will start in early January and run for 12-13 weeks depending on the holiday schedule.
Registration begins on Monday, November 8 for residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. Non-resident children who attend Garden City Public Schools may register beginning Dec. 1. Registration can be done in person or by mail by downloading our application off our website at www.gardencityrecreation.org. Our administrative offices are located at 108 Rockaway Ave.

Tots Tennis (ages 4 to 5, 5-year-old that are in Preschool)

Pee Wee Tennis (ages 5 to 7 years.
5 year olds that are in kindergarten)
The major goal of this program is to introduce young children into the ‘fun and rewarding world’ of tennis. The equipment and size of the playing area are tailored down to a comfortable size for young children. Emphasis is placed on learning basic movement and striking skills. Rackets are provided at this level only.

Novice Tennis Program (ages 6 and 7)
The Novice level program is designed for children who have taken two or more sessions of Pee Wee Tennis Lessons, and who have mastered the basic movement and striking skills. The children will be introduced to a full size tennis court, but emphasis continues to be on the ‘fun world’ of tennis, while reinforcing the basic movement and striking skills. Serving and scorekeeping will also be introduced.

Junior Tennis Program

The Junior program is an extension of the Novice Level Program. Emphasis continues to be on efficient movement and striking concepts, and skills related to tennis play. The concept of trying hard, having fun, and improving remains at the heart of the lessons. An introduction to the benefits of competitive fair play and respect for opponents is provided.

Senior Tennis Program
(ages 12 and older)
The Senior Programs are focused on the fundamentals of recreational and competitive play, including tennis fitness, stroke mechanics; positional play movement, and strategies. All strokes are introduced and/or reviewed in the first several sessions, with drills and integration of strokes and strategies built into subsequent lessons.

Registration for Second Session of Peewee Sports
The second session of the Recreation Department’s Peewee Sports Sampler will begin the week of Nov. 9. This six-week program incorporates a variety of sports with basic instruction geared to the preschool aged child. Each session runs for one hour, one a week and is instructional, combining news skills and free play in a non-competitive setting. This program in open to Garden City residents ages 4-5. A participant must be 4 years of age by the start of the class in order to participate.

The PeeWee Sport program will be held in St. Paul’s Fieldhouse and will cost $75 for the six-week session. To register, please visit the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave. Please make check payable to the Inc. Village of Garden City.
Adult Dance Exercise Classes Now Forming
Garden City Recreation will be offering the following adult dance classes with Felicia Lovaglio as the instructor, which began Oct. 19. The following classes for adults are offered:
Ballet: Tuesdays at 9:15 a.m. 8 weeks $72
Zumba: Tuesdays at 7:45 p.m. 8 weeks $72
Zumba: Thursdays at 9:15 a.m. 8 weeks $72
Dance Performance Group Saturdays at 10 a.m. — this class teaches different dance techniques and will culminate with a dance performance in late spring. This 20-week program costs $180.
All classes take place in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall. This program is open to adult residents of the Village of Garden City. To register for any of these classes, visit the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave.
Additional Zumba Class Added on Saturdays
Due to the overwhelming popularity of our newest exercise program, we have added a Zumba class on Saturday morning for those who work during the week or just want to take a second class! This class will take place in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall on Saturdays at 9 a.m. beginning Saturday, Nov. 6. The cost of this six-week program will be $54. Rec Department Platform Court Membership Application for Residents
The Community Park Platform Tennis resident membership covers anyone interested in playing platform tennis on a regular basis from Sept. 15, 2010 to April 15, 2011. This membership is open to any individual who is a resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City. It covers unlimited play for the membership holder only under the rules and regulations set forth by the Garden City Recreation Department. It does not cover any programs or special events that the Recreation Department itself chooses to run, nor does it cover guests. Said events would require an additional fee if applicable. The fee for membership will be $225. To register for membership, visit the Recreation Administrative Offices at 108 Rockaway Ave. Checks should be made payable to the “Village of Garden City.”
