Assemblyman Conte Helps Secure Grants for Local Libraries
Assemblyman Jim Conte has announced that libraries in his district have been awarded nearly $150,000 in state grants. The grants are supported by a special $14 million appropriation in capital funds for public library construction provided in the 2010-11 State Budget.
“I was pleased to do my part in helping to secure this important funding for several libraries in my district,” said Conte. “These grants will help make libraries in the region more accessible for seniors and disabled residents while providing the funding to make necessary improvements to these important learning centers.”
Libraries receiving grant funding for construction projects in Assemblyman Conte’s district include:
* Bethpage Public Library will receive $48,491 for the installation of solar photovoltaic panels on their roof;
* Farmingdale Public Library will receive $97,140 for the construction of a new entryway on the south side of their facility; reconstruction of existing space to create a new children’s library and new media center; and
* South Huntington Public Library will receive $2,500 for the demolition and reconstruction of existing storage space to create a new program room.
“These grants will go a long way to ensuring that our libraries receive updates necessary for them to better meet the needs of the community,” remarked Conte. “It is important for the state to continue its commitment to our public libraries to ensure that these valuable resources are around for generations to come.”
New York’s public libraries are in urgent need of renovation and upgrading. A recent survey showed a documented need for public library construction and renovation projects totaling more than $2.53 billion. More than 40 percent of the over 1,000 public library buildings in communities across New York are over 60 years old.
