Was it revenge or defense?

A Bangladeshi woman, 40, cut off a man’s penis during an alleged attempted rape. She took the organ to a police station as evidence, police said.

The incident occurred in Mirzapur village, Jhalakathi, which is about 124 miles south of the capital, Dhaka.

Monju Begum who is married and a mother of three children was “attacked” Saturday night while sleeping in her shanty.

“As he tried to rape her, the lady cut his penis off with a knife. She then wrapped up the penis in a piece of polythene and brought it to the Jhalakathi police station as evidence of the crime,” police chief Abul Khaer said.

Once at the police station, the woman filed a case accusing Mozammel Haq Mazi, who is also 40 and a married father of five, of attempted rape. She added that the man had been harassing her for six months, according to BBC.

The disjoined penis was kept at the police station while rape suspect who denies the accusation was receiving treatment in the hospital.

“We will arrest him once his condition gets better,” police spokesman Abul Khaer told the BBC. He continued, “It is quite an unusual incident. As far as I am aware, this is the first time that a woman has brought a severed penis to the police station as evidence.”

While in the hospital Mr. Mazi tells a much different story than Begum, “We were having an affair and recently she suggested that both of us can go and settle down in Dhaka. I refused and told her that I cannot leave my wife and children, so she took revenge on me.”

A senior surgeon at the Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital in Barisal town revealed to BBC that it was not possible to reattach the organ, but they, “are treating him so that he can urinate normally without the penis.”

Severing a man’s penis is quite the punishment, whether it is as a result from an attempted rape or broken-hearted revenge.
