Quantcast

From the Desk of Dr. Charles Murphy: June 3, 2011

Recently, the Island Trees School District completed all of the New York State mandated assessments in English Language Arts and Math. This testing period takes up a considerable amount of time for students, and even more for our staff. In fact, our teachers pulled from their classroom assignments and often spend many extra hours after school scoring these state required assessments during this two-week period of time.

Unfortunately, even after we score the exams, we do not receive the final results from New York State. Our hand-scored results are sent to Albany where they are “normed” with the rest of New York State school districts. It can take many weeks before we find out if students “passed” or “failed” according to state measures. This can be very frustrating for the teachers, parents, and students who all want feedback on these state proficiency exams.

At this time, we anticipate the scaled scores from these standardized tests to be sent back to us during July. At that point, we will share information with our staff, as well as parents. Admittedly, the state testing process can be difficult to understand, so if you have any questions, please feel free to call your child’s teacher or building principal. We’re all available to assist you.
