According to Suffolk County Police, they received a 911 call reporting that two men were in distress in the waters off of the end of Jefferson Drive in Mastic Beach at approximately 3:40 p.m. Saturday The two men, who were part of a larger group that remained on land, had entered the waters of Narrow Bay to go crabbing.
After being alerted to the problem, two bystanders entered the water and swam to the location of the two men. Upon arrival they were able to locate one of the swimmers, Gordon Sung, and took him to shore. The other swimmer, Ivan Vuong, 21, was pulled out of the water by members of the Mastic Beach Fire Department. Vulong was brought onto the fire department’s vessel and emergency care was initiated and then transferred to members of the Mastic Beach Ambulance Company that were waiting on shore.
Vuong, of Bayside, New York, was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue, where he was admitted in critical condition. Sung, 21, of Rego Park, New York, was also transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
