Apple Festival

Hosted by the Amityville Rotary Club (631-532-3500) on the grounds of the First United Methodist Church, 25 Broadway, Amityville (just north of Merrick Rd.), from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. Apples can be purchased by the bag the day of the festival. You can choose from several different varieties. Advance orders can be made by calling Linda Blatz 631-264-0300 or Wes Powell 631-691-0172. The cost will be available when orders are placed. Also sold at the event will be apple pies, apple cider and other treats, arts and crafts vendors, seasonal plants, face painting and music. Shred-It of Plainview will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 2 pm. and will shred personal papers (one box per person). The service is free and safe and confidential.

Gold Star Families Remembrance

NC Executive Edward P. Mangano will join “Gold Star” mothers, fathers and families as they offer a “Remembrance of Our Fallen Heroes” program at the Veterans Memorial in Eisenhower Park from 3 to 5 p.m. The ceremony, which will be open to the general public, will honor the memory of U.S. Armed Forces personnel from NYS who have died in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. “We want to make sure that the sacrifices made by our sons and daughters – and their memories – are not forgotten,” says Levittown resident Nancy Fuentes, whose son, Spc. Exercise Through Roller Skating

October is National Roller Skating Month and the Roller Skating Association International is encouraging children and adults alike to get exercise through a safe, healthy and fun activity – roller skating. Lauren Fink, event coordinator of United Skates of America, is encouraging children and adults to get out from in front of the television and enjoy the sport of skating by offering a free family skate session for the Long Island community.The session is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon. The free family day will feature skating instructors on hand to help beginner skaters. There will be character appearances, games, trivia, give-aways and more. The admission fee is waived for all participants.

Marine and Outdoor Recreation Expo

This year’s expo will feature exhibits on solar energy, green technology, renewable energy, and environmental protection and conservation. Additional activities will include touch-tank displays, face painting, kayaking, fly-fishing and surf casting lessons, snapper fishing and more. The event is free to the public and guests of all ages are encouraged to attend. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Jones Beach West End Boat Basin. The usual Jones Beach $8 parking fee still applies.

Italian Heritage Day Celebration

Nassau Community College’s Center for Italian American Studies, The LI Chapter of the American Italian Historical Association and the Order of the Sons of Italy in America, New York Grand Lodge, invite the community to attend its twenty sixth annual Italian Heritage Day celebration 
“Italianita in America,” which will be held at the College on beginning at 9 a.m. Highlights: Ancient Culture: New Country Italy After Unification, Dr. Mario Mignone; Italian Americans Today: A Socio-Demographic Snapshot, Dr. William Egelman; Italian Influences in American Food, Fashion, Furniture, Film and Automobile features a panel discussion. Heart Healthy Day

Farmingdale State College will offer a Healthy Heart Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Great lawn outside of Roosevelt Hall. October is National Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month. The event is free and the community is encouraged to attend. Today marks the second anniversary of the death of Dominic Murray, a freshman at the college. Dom died from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) while playing a game of pick-up basketball. To honor Dom’s memory and to raise awareness of SCA, Farmingdale State College and the Dominic Murray 21 Memorial Foundation will offer a day of potentially lifesaving information. Dominic’s mother, Melinda Murray, created the Dominic Murray 21 Memorial Foundation to honor her son’s memory and to raise awareness of SCA. The St. Francis Hospital Cardiovascular Screening Mobile Unit will offer free cardiovascular screenings. Information tables from the campus and from organizations such as the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association LI Miracles Chapter will educate participants. Friends and family (hands only) CPR training will be taught from noon to 2 p.m. At 1 p.m., Dr. Erik Altman, an electrophysiologist, will speak about SCA.

Taste of the Town

YESCCC Annual “Taste of the Town” celebration from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Stuart Thomas Manor, Boundary Ave., Farmingdale. Tickets are 40 per person. Last year, over 35 restaurants and specialty food, beverage and floral establishments participated in this event with over 200 guests. Columbus Day Annual Street Fair

The Farmingdale Fire Department generously donated a table at the street fair to the chamber. The chamber will be promoting membership, distributing chamber tote bags and chip clips and will also conduct a raffle. Donate a raffle prize in exchange for a presence at the fair. All donations will be advertised to everyone who stops at the chamber’s table. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The fair begins on Oct. 6 and runs through October 10. Street Fair Saturday and Sunday (the chamber table will be manned on Saturday only). Rides all weekend long. Parade on Sunday. Fireworks and BBQ in the rear parking lot of the firehouse.

Farmingdale United Methodist Church, 407 Main St. (corner of Grant Ave.) will celebrate the Columbus Day Fair with its annual Yard Sale on Oct. 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Oct. 9 from noon to 5 p.m. New and used items will be for sale, including household goods, toys and crafts, including our best-selling wooden roses and new figurines courtesy of Nicole’s Flower & Gift Shop. Farmingdale Adult Day Care Center

A social day care program offering socialization and stimulation to persons 60 and over. The caring staff provides innovative activities for those who can no longer attend regular senior centers because of physical and/or mental impairment. It also affords respite to caregivers allowing them valued time to devote to matters of home or personal needs. This interfaith service meets on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 407 Main St. Support groups are also held once a month on Wednesdays. Farmingdale State College Offers Free Instruction

•Learning the Torah and Haftorah Trops on Mondays at 7 p.m. Instructor Rabbi Alan Lavin. This is a practical course for those who can read Hebrew to learn how to participate more easily at services and lead prayers. The course is open to all men and women.

•Beginners Hebrew course, sponsored by Hadassah, will be held at on Mondays at 7 p.m. Instructor Murray Zwerling. For those who would like to learn or improve their basic Hebrew reading.

•Introduction to Jewish Prayer on Mondays at 8:15 p.m. Text: To Pray as a Jew by Rabbi Haim Donnin. Instructor Rabbi Alan Lavin. The course is designed for those who would like to learn the history, meaning and structure of the siddur.

•Sisterhood Book Club – If you have an interest in reading, the Sisterhood Book Club is for you. Join other women to discuss interesting books. Call the synagogue office for more information about the Book Club and Sisterhood events.

Adults and Children With Learning Disabilities

ACLD, a private not-for-profit agency, is offering individual and family counseling for the primary caregivers of individuals with developmental disabilities. Support groups are available for parents and siblings and new groups for senior parents, parents of transitioning high school students as well as a group for parents who have a developmental disability. Farmingdale United Methodist Nursery School

Offers classes for children from 18 months old through 5 years old where they can grow, play and learn together. The school offers a well-rounded program designed to stimulate the child creatively, socially, intellectually, physically and emotionally. Children are exposed to a variety of art-media, paint, finger paint, chalk, dough, pasting, cutting, coloring, writing, block play, music, group work, books, circle and story time, cooking experiences, puppet show, all types of parties, movement classes, computers, outdoor and indoor large motor activities and stimulating walking distance field trips. Bring a Smile to a Poor Person’s Face

That is the invitation being sent across LI by Hope for the Future Ministries, a Farmingdale-based not-for-profit organization which helps the poor and homeless. Items needed include warm hats and scarves, thermal gloves and socks, thermal underwear, sweatshirts and sweatpants, toiletries and toys, new gifts, unwrapped with price tags removed. •Alcohol/Substance Dependency Support Group. Celebrate Recovery is a nationally acclaimed program that invites people of any faith or no faith at all to experience God’s healing power in the lives of all who suffer from alcohol or drug dependency. Mondays from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

•Divorce/Separation Support Group. DivorceCare helps people recover from the pain of separation and divorce. Become a part of a small support group of people who are experiencing the same. This is a non-denominational video seminar with nationally recognized experts on divorce and recovery. Thursdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

•Grief Recovery Support Group. GriefShare is a non-denominational, 13-week video seminar featuring interviews with leading authors, counselors, speakers and pastors with years of expertise in grief recovery. Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m.

Pretty New Thrift Shop

Donations are needed for the Pretty New Thrift Shop, 238 Main St., Farmingdale. The shop supports the work of Central Nassau Guidance and Counseling Services, Inc., a multi-service mental health and substance abuse agency located in Hicksville. The shop is open Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and accepts gently used clothing, housewares, furniture and collectibles. Call 420-1394.

Free Writer’s Workshops

Got a hidden talent? Why not share it and develop it at a free writer’s workshop? The LI Writer’s Guild is a friendly, Nassau County-based organization of amateur/professional, published/unpublished poets, essayists, novelists and short story writers who meet at informal workshops at the Levittown and Bethpage Libraries. Everything from plot development to characterization to basic literary theory for the fiction and nonfiction writer alike is discussed and practiced. There are reading and critiquing sessions and recommendations and contacts for the more serious writers seeking to publish their work is provided.
