Pumpkin Patch

The Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church, 1845 Wantagh Ave., Wantagh, will be holding its annual Pumpkin Patch. There will be gourds and corn stalks available. The hours are Monday – Friday from 1 to 7 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. It will be open through Oct. 31 on the front lawn of the church.

Walk to Prevent Suicide

Take steps to help save lives. Support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention by participating in the Out of the Darkness walk at Old Westbury Gardens. Proceeds will benefit local and national suicide prevention and awareness programs. Gray Wolf Program

The Nassau Hiking and Outdoor Club hosts 4 or 5 educational programs each year. These programs, which take place at the Special Events Building in Eisenhower Park, cover a wide variety of topics relating to the outdoors. The programs are free of charge and open to the public. The next program is scheduled 7 pm. A representative from the National Wolfwatcher Coalition will discuss the re-introduction of the gray wolf into Yellowstone National Park as well as their work with regional wolves. Volunteer Fair

Farmingdale State College will host the 5thAnnual Long Island Volunteer Fair from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Roosevelt Hall. Over 65 nonprofit agencies will exhibit, showcasing a wide array of volunteer activities. There is no charge to attend. The fair provides the opportunity to learn about the needs of the Long Island community and how people can help. A kickoff rally will be held prior to the Fair from 10 to 10:30 a.m. in the Little Theater. Social Ballroom Dancing

Takes place in Hicksville at the VFW Post, 320 South Broadway, every Friday from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Tuna salad, coffee, tea, bagels, bialys, pastries. Professional ballroom DJ. Farmingdale Fire Open House

On Friday, Oct. 21 the Farmingdale Fire Department will host its annual Fire Prevention Open House. From 5:45 p.m. at the main firehouse at 361 Main Street, fire safety professionals will demonstrate a fire safe house, live fire drills, vehicle extractions, basic first aid instruction, fire extinguisher safety, smoke and carbon monoxide detector usage, and many other activities. Tour the firehouse and meet local firefighters.  Refreshments will be served.

Food Drive

The Center for the Alignment of Body, Mind and Spirit be sponsoring a food drive for the Harry Chapin Food Bank from Oct. 24 through Oct. 29. Donations of nonperishable food items can be dropped off at 2050 Wantagh Ave., Wantagh, during our normal business hours. (Monday-Wednesday-Friday 9-1 and 3-7, Tuesday 4-7, Saturday 9:30-12:30. The Harry Chapin Food Bank provides emergency food where and when it is needed, sponsors programs that help families achieve self-sufficiency, and educates the general public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island.

Head Injuries in Youth Sports

Preventing, Recognizing and Managing Head Injuries in Youth Sports: What ADs, Coaches and Staff Need to Know. Presented by the NC Sports Commission and Briarcliffe College. Discussion led by Steven Rokito, MD. Topics include protocol for handling concussions, liability issues for coaches and testimonials. The Columbiettes are sponsoring a Bunco Game Night Fundraiser on Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. (doors open 6:30 p.m.). Cost: $10 includes game, coffee and dessert, Prizes and raffles. Farmingdale Adult Day Care Center

A social day care program offering socialization and stimulation to persons 60 and over. The caring staff provides innovative activities for those who can no longer attend regular senior centers because of physical and/or mental impairment. It also affords respite to caregivers allowing them valued time to devote to matters of home or personal needs. This interfaith service meets on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 407 Main St. Support groups are also held once a month on Wednesdays. Free Educational Services

Free courses and academic advice is available to economically and educationally disadvantages adults. The LI Educational Opportunity Center offers programs leading to employment in a variety of fields as well as entrance to college. The LIEOC has satellite units in many areas. Exhibit

Milton Glaser: To Inform and Delight, an exhibition of Glaser’s most storied posters presented by Farmingdale State College. Throughout his career, Milton Glaser has been a prolific creator of posters. His art is the embodiment of American visual culture during the latter half of the 20th century. In 2002, he was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame and in 2004, he was selected for the lifetime achievement award of the Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum. These two awards speak to and celebrate an epic career that has seamlessly knit together the worlds of graphic design and illustration and will forever deeply influence the way we see. On view through Oct. 28 in the The Memorial Gallery at Farmingdale State College, 2350 Broadhollow Rd. (Route 110). All welcome. •Learning the Torah and Haftorah Trops on Mondays at 7 p.m. Instructor Rabbi Alan Lavin. This is a practical course for those who can read Hebrew to learn how to participate more easily at services and lead prayers. The course is open to all men and women.

•Beginners Hebrew course, sponsored by Hadassah, will be held at on Mondays at 7 p.m. Instructor Murray Zwerling. For those who would like to learn or improve their basic Hebrew reading.

•Introduction to Jewish Prayer on Mondays at 8:15 p.m. Text: To Pray as a Jew by Rabbi Haim Donnin. Instructor Rabbi Alan Lavin. The course is designed for those who would like to learn the history, meaning and structure of the siddur.

•Sisterhood Book Club – If you have an interest in reading, the Sisterhood Book Club is for you. Join other women to discuss interesting books. Call the synagogue office for more information about the Book Club and Sisterhood events.

Adults and Children With Learning Disabilities

ACLD, a private not-for-profit agency, is offering individual and family counseling for the primary caregivers of individuals with developmental disabilities. Support groups are available for parents and siblings and new groups for senior parents, parents of transitioning high school students as well as a group for parents who have a developmental disability. Farmingdale United Methodist Nursery School

Offers classes for children from 18 months old through 5 years old where they can grow, play and learn together. The school offers a well-rounded program designed to stimulate the child creatively, socially, intellectually, physically and emotionally. Children are exposed to a variety of art-media, paint, finger paint, chalk, dough, pasting, cutting, coloring, writing, block play, music, group work, books, circle and story time, cooking experiences, puppet show, all types of parties, movement classes, computers, outdoor and indoor large motor activities and stimulating walking distance field trips. Bring a Smile to a Poor Person’s Face

That is the invitation being sent across LI by Hope for the Future Ministries, a Farmingdale-based not-for-profit organization which helps the poor and homeless. Items needed include warm hats and scarves, thermal gloves and socks, thermal underwear, sweatshirts and sweatpants, toiletries and toys, new gifts, unwrapped with price tags removed. •Alcohol/Substance Dependency Support Group. Celebrate Recovery is a nationally acclaimed program that invites people of any faith or no faith at all to experience God’s healing power in the lives of all who suffer from alcohol or drug dependency. Mondays from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

•Divorce/Separation Support Group. DivorceCare helps people recover from the pain of separation and divorce. Become a part of a small support group of people who are experiencing the same. This is a non-denominational video seminar with nationally recognized experts on divorce and recovery. Thursdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

•Grief Recovery Support Group. GriefShare is a non-denominational, 13-week video seminar featuring interviews with leading authors, counselors, speakers and pastors with years of expertise in grief recovery. Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m.

Pretty New Thrift Shop

Donations are needed for the Pretty New Thrift Shop, 238 Main St., Farmingdale. The shop supports the work of Central Nassau Guidance and Counseling Services, Inc., a multi-service mental health and substance abuse agency located in Hicksville. The shop is open Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and accepts gently used clothing, housewares, furniture and collectibles. Call 420-1394.

Free Writer’s Workshops

Got a hidden talent? Why not share it and develop it at a free writer’s workshop? The LI Writer’s Guild is a friendly, Nassau County-based organization of amateur/professional, published/unpublished poets, essayists, novelists and short story writers who meet at informal workshops at the Levittown and Bethpage Libraries. Everything from plot development to characterization to basic literary theory for the fiction and nonfiction writer alike is discussed and practiced. There are reading and critiquing sessions and recommendations and contacts for the more serious writers seeking to publish their work is provided.
