Christopher Benny Knows Oyster Bay

“Wow, you really went ‘old school’ on this one,” said Christopher Benney of the Oct. 13 mystery picture in the Enterprise Pilot.

What is the year of this photo? Anyhow I think it’s taken from the southbound side of South street, down by where Snouder’s used to be. It’s amazing to see how much the town has developed.” Mr. Benny is correct. The photograph is from the collection of Oyster Bay Town Historian John Hammond and was taken at his slide show at Christ Church on Oct. 1 in celebration of the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Public Library’s 110 Anniversary.

“I’d like to give the Oct. 13 mystery picture a shot. The photographer seems to have been standing in front of Snouder’s on South Street. The building in the left-side background looks like Joe Dee’s (not sure what it is now). [Closed until further notice.] Across the street from the car would be Nobman’s and Hanophy’s and Uwe’s.

“Forgive me if I’m wrong as most of my memories of OB are pre-1968.

“Greetings from the soggy Pacific Northwest!” wrote Rich Mancini, OBHS Class of ‘68.

Maureen Donegan Ramirez said by email, “It looks to me like the car is heading ‘south’ on South Street across from Hanophy’s Meat Market. It looks like the ‘summer White House’ is in the background on the right hand corner.”

You are all correct and just wonderful to remember Old Oyster Bay. Many thanks to John Hammond for the wonderful photograph.
