Editorial: History Comes Alive in Oyster Bay

We were delighted to hear that the Town of Oyster Bay purchased the house between the parking lot on West Main Street and the Raynham Hall property.

The purchase of the house has long been something we have been hearing about – it is wonderful to see that it has finally come about. It will be a great help to the museum as it tells the many wonderful stories it has to share.

In this edition of the Enterprise Pilot we talked about the Tall Ships that are part of the story of the Townsend Family. When we have visited the house/museum we have stood at the little window in what was the exhibit/classroom on the second floor, where you can look out and see the harbor.

We have imagined tall ship masts poking out over the trees letting the Townsends know their merchandise had arrived.

It is wonderful to walk through the hamlet and see the past still alive and here, as Oyster Bay Town Historian John Hammond quoted William Faulkner as saying, “The past is not dead, it is with us today.”

Oyster Bay can be a walk through history – the more you know, the more you enjoy being here.
