Goldman Bros. retailer a devoted family, community man
Hicksville recently lost a prominent figure in the community, Howard Goldman, 83, who passed away Wednesday, Nov. 2 from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease complications.
Goldman lived in Hicksville with his wife and children for more than half a century and took pride in establishing relationships with customers at his athletic supply store Goldman Bros. on Route 107, which closed its doors late last year.
“He was well known in Hicksville and was there his whole life, basically since 1939,” said his son, Win, who resides in Huntington.
Howard’s father, Morris, an auctioneer, relocated from the Bronx to Hicksville in 1939 and purchased a clothing store along Route 107 – then a two-lane road lined by potato fields on either side. The store was originally a haberdashery that sold men’s and boy’s sportswear.
Hicksville came to know Goldman Bros. as a reliable source for athletic wear with knowledgeable and friendly employees. At the time Goldman Bros. closed, several employees had been working there for decades.
Morris Goldman passed away in 1950 and left the store to his sons, Howard and Irwin. Both young men graduated from Hicksville High School and Columbia University.
Howard enjoyed sales and the personal connection to customers, many of whom he knew for several years. Howard was also an active member at the Midway Jewish Center in Syosset.
The burial service was held Friday, Nov. 4 at Mount Ararat Cemetery in Farmingdale.
“A fund has been set up in my father’s memory at Zucker Hillside Hospital where he received outstanding care as a geriatric patient with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s,” said Win, who noted that the facility is also researching both diseases.
