Newsday Driver Hurt in Blue Point Hit-and-run

A Newsday truck driver was injured in a hit-and-run crash in Blue Point early Sunday.

The driver, 46-year-old Douglas Piekarski of Sound Beach was driving an International Newsday delivery truck west on Montauk Highway, near Homan Avenue, at 4:35 a.m. when his vehicle was struck by a Chevrolet Malibu headed east. The crash caused the truck to overturn while at the same time, the driver of the Malibu jumped out of the car and fled the scene.

Piekarski was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center where he was admitted with serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries.

The investigation is continuing and detectives are asking that anyone who may have witnessed this crash to contact the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
