Hundreds Freezing for a Reason at Polar Plunge

Approximately 500 brave souls gathered at North Hempstead Town Beach, tripped down and plunged into the icy Hempstead Harbor water to raise money for the Special Olympics and at the last count almost $85,000 was raised.

North Hempsead Town Supervisior Jon Kaiman, with his entire family, along with New York State Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel and North Hempstead Town Councilwoman Dina DiGiorgio, and members of her family, all “took the plunge.”

Thankfully, the day was not as bitter cold as it has been in the past and so it was almost bearable, except for those brave souls who actually threw themselves into Hempstead Harbor.

Needless to say, the “plungers” did not linger.  After they were led by some of the members of the police bag pipers it did not take long before they were bolting out, grabbing their clothes and heading either for home or to change in one of the dressing rooms at the park.
