Sophomore Justin Cooksey earns berth in state finals
Sophomore Justin Cooksey had a second place finish at the New York State Wrestling Championships on Feb. 25. Cooksey won his first three matches to earn a berth in the New York State Finals at the 106 lbs. weight class. Cooksey finished his season with 43 wins and four losses, the Nassau County 106 lbs.
Senior Joe Cataldo also earned a wild-card spot to this year’s 2012 New York State Wrestling Championships as well. Cataldo’s outstanding season along with being a two-time finalist at the Nassau County Tournament earned him a spot on this year’s Nassau County Wrestling team. He joined teammate Cooksey in Albany where both helped the Nassau team finish in second place in the team results at the NYS Championships.
Including Cooksey and Cataldo, the Generals also had a total of seven All-County wrestlers this season. The following wrestler earned All-County honors: Anthony Boccasini – fourth place; Chris Cataldo – sixth place; Rob Bennett – fifth place; Michael Marrero – fifth place; Steven Schneider – third place.
The Generals also had 20 wrestlers finish with All-League honors and 15 of those competed in the 2012 Nassau County Tournament. In dual-meet team competition, the Generals were semi-finalists in the Nassau County Dual-Meet Championships. After winning three tough matches against Uniondale, Island Trees and Bellmore, the Generals had to square off against No. 1 in New York State, Wantagh, in the semi-finals.
The Generals wrestled a tremendous match but came up one match short of pulling off the upset. Despite the loss, the Generals wrestled great.
The wrestling Generals look to keep their success going and will try to bring home both a Nassau County Dual-Meet Title and Nassau County Championship Team Title in 2012-2013.
