Easter is known for many things besides the religious aspects of the holiday. The holiday is also known for Easter egg hunts, bunnies, and candy Peeps.
Yes that’s right, no Easter is complete without a few Peeps. Over the years, the sugar-filled treat has become a traditional Easter treat and has been made in a variety of colors and styles.
And while you celebrate Easter Sunday with a fun-colored Peep, you may wonder how exactly they came to be.
CNN took note in recent years, releasing a video chronicling the candy’s history. The video explains how they evolved from a candy that took hours to make to having a cult-like following that even includes Facebook fan pages.
Sam Born is the man behind Peeps and according to CNN, in the 1920′s, the Russian immigrant decided to open his very own chocolate shop in New York named “Just Born.” He later bought a candy-making company that specialized in jelly beans and marshmallow chicks, and “Peep.”
During its first few years, the Peep took 30 hours to make and it was all by hand. But today, thanks to the massive popularity of Peeps today, the family-owned business makes Peeps 24 hours a day, five days a week and produces 2 billion Peeps a year.
