During an interview Jennifer Lawrence said, “Screw PETA,” and she wasn’t referring to Peeta Mellark, one of the “Hunger Games” main characters.
Lawrence was referencing People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and now PETA is quite ticked at miss Katniss Everdeen.
When she was recently interviewing with Rolling Stone mag, “The Hunger Games” phenomenon Jennifer Lawrence talked about her gross, squirrel-skinning scene from “Winter’s Bone.” The 2010 movie earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination. Lawrence, 21, explains to the mag that skinning the squirrel was not just for the cameras, the moment was real.
“I should say it wasn’t real, for PETA,” Lawrence told Rolling Stone. “But screw PETA.”
Just as Lawrence probably suspected, PETA was not thrilled by Lawrence’s comment.
“She’s young and the plight of animals somehow hasn’t yet touched her heart. As Henry David Thoreau said, ‘The squirrel you kill in jest, dies in earnest,'” PETA’s president, Ingrid Newkirk, explained to Gothamist Tuesday morning. “When people kill animals, it is the animals who are ‘screwed,’ not PETA, and one day I hope she will try to make up for any pain she might cause any animal who did nothing but try to eke out a humble existence in nature.”
Even though it is being made to seem like skinning a squirrel was just another no big deal, during an interview with E! in 2010, Lawrence said she got really emotional when one of her brother’s friends was showing her how to skin the animal. “He cut it open,” she recalled. “And then I went and cried in the house and let him finish.”
Even though PETA’s president dissed Lawrence, they are predicting positive future relationship between Lawrence and animals. PETA explains to MTV News, “That was just a throw-away remark and we have our bet on Jennifer ending up joining the ranks of other young celebrities like Natalie Portman, Lea Michele, and Kellan Lutz, who are using their influence to help animals.”
