National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day

Grilled Mac and Cheese ongrill 490Grilled cheese sandwich lovers rejoice: today is National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day.

What better way to celebrate the day dedicated to grilled cheese whether from a lounge chair, desk chair or restaurant chair, than chowing down on that cheesy goodness.

But while biting down evokes fond memories of the days when mom or dad slapped a single piece of cheese on two slices of white bread and popped it in your lunch box for you to find later, grilled cheese sandwiches just ain’t the same.

Over the years that super easy sandwich that has become a favorite among foodies, has evolved into so much more. Some chefs have taken the simple recipe and done amazing things with it, adding more delicious ingredients and exotic cheeses.

One example of the grilled cheese sandwich evolution is the Grilled Mac & Cheese with BBQ Pulled Pork from Panini Happy (which was adapted from the recipe on FoodNetwork.com). The grilled cheese is like a regular grilled cheese on steroids; jampacked with macaroni and pulled pork placed between cheese dividers and wrapped in two pieces of warm sourdough bread. YUM!

Check out the recipe here.

While this recipe is new, and to you it seems like mom and dad’s grilled cheese recipe was old news, according to PunchBowl.com, the sandwich we know and love is actually the product of ancient times.

“The Ancient Romans were the first civilization to make a cooked bread and cheese sandwich,” reports Punch Bowl and says, “The classic American grilled cheese sandwich emerged in the 1920s when inexpensive cheese and affordable sliced bread became available.”

So sit back and enjoy your grilled cheese sandwich regardless of who made it for you. Enjoy!
