Police Involved Shooting in Roosevelt

A police involved shooting occurred on April 15, 2012 in Roosevelt at 4:47 a.m. according to the Public Information Office.

As indicated by Detectives, authorities received an emergency call that stated a man with a gun was in front of 498 Nassau Road. When authorities arrived they found a man who fit the description of the man from the complainant’s phone call.

When the male saw the police officers, he began to run through rear yards and when authorities saw the man was in possession of a gun they began a foot chase after the male subject.

They caught up with him in front of 35 West Raymond Avenue and after the man refused to show officers his hands and comply with their directions an officer fired his gun and shot the man with the right elbow.

Even after the man was shot he still did not comply with the demands of the authorities but was taken into custody without any other injury taking place. The defendant was later taken to Nassau University Medical Center to treat his gunshot wound. He wasn’t the only person injured, six police officers were taken to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.

The defendant has been identified as Kelly Baldwin, 26, of Freeport. Baldwin is charged with two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Resisting Arrest and Unlawful Possession of Marijuana.

He is scheduled to be arraigned when it is deemed medically practical by doctors.

The investigation is continuing.
