Dan Savage Discusses Bible at High School Journalism Convention (Video)

Picture 1Syndicated sex advice columnist Dan Savage sparked his latest controversy while discussing the Bible and its stance on homosexuality during a recent journalism convention.

“We can learn to ignore the bull**** in the Bible about gay people,”  Savage, who is gay, was quoted as saying during a recent high school journalism conference. “The same way we have learned to ignore the bullshit in the Bible about shellfish, about slavery, about dinner, about farming, about menstruation, about virginity, about masturbation. We ignore bull**** in the Bible about all sorts of things.”

Students reportedly flocked out of the auditorium, clearly not happy with his choice words.

“We ignore what the Bible said about slavery, because the Bible got slavery wrong,” Savage  continued. He pointed out another Bible standard that many refuse to abide by today: virginity. “The Bible says that if a woman isn’t a virgin on her wedding night, she shall be dragged to her father’s doorstep and stoned to death,” he said before joking, “Callista Gingrich lives.”

Savage, no stranger to controversy, later explained his position in less inflammatory terms.

“I apologize if I hurt anyone’s feelings, but I have a right to defend myself and to point out the hypocrisy of people who justify anti-gay bigotry by pointing to the Bible and insisting we must live by the code of Leviticus on this one issue and no other,” he said.

Since his discussion, a video of it has gone viral and has sparked many to comment and criticize him. Savage apologized only for his use of the word pansy.

According to reports, he released a statement that said, “I would like to apologize for describing that walk out as a pansy-assed move. I wasn’t calling the handful of students who left pansies (2,800+ students, most of them Christian, stayed and listened), just the walk-out itself.”
