The Future?
“What am I going to do with my life?”
This question is being asked all over our country as college graduations take place. The caps and gowns will soon be discarded and the job search will begin. The celebrity speakers have disappeared and their vague statements are all in the past.
“Where is my next job coming from?”
“How will I pay back my student loan?”
“What am I going to do for a living?”
“Where am I going to live?”
These questions won’t be answered immediately. Much worn shoe leather and many telephone inquiries lie in the future.
My grandson Lewis has had a varied career, even though he is only 6-and-half years old. His first career choice was that of a musician. He became an expert on guitars and all stringed instruments. Banjos, ukuleles, fiddles, balalaikas and guitars all went into the learning process before Lewis attacked his next desire.
His next passion was magic. Houdini and Blackstone were those of whom he spoke. You were his audience, even if you didn’t care to be. His magic baton, disappearing coins and card tricks were performed over and over again: there was no way to make him stop.
The Harlem Globetrotters were his next avid interest. He loved watching their comedic routines and singing their theme song, “Sweet Georgia Brown.” Next came Hebrew school, and he quickly learned the Hebrew alphabet and many prayers in Hebrew. Lately he has become a New York Mets fan. He can name the entire squad and give you the numbers each of the players wear on their back.
Like Lewis, these recent college graduates will go through many ideas and strong interests in the years ahead. They must be both flexible and steadfast in their seeking of employment. It’s not easy. Hopefully they can find fields they love, like Lewis. Best wishes to the Class of 2012.
