Nassau County and village police departments are participating in a national campaign to promote safer driving.

From May 21 until June 3, police departments around the country will crack down drivers and passengers who do not wear seatbelts, especially at night, as part of the Click It or Ticket initiative.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 51 percent of the 12,187 people who died in car crashes in 2010 were not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Out of the 10,647 people who died in traffic accidents between the overnight hours of 6 p.m. to 5:59 a.m. in 2010, 61 percent were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.

In addition to the Nassau County Police Department, the village police departments of Centre Island, Floral Park, Freeport, Garden City, Glen Cove, Great Neck Estates, Hempstead, Kensington, Lake Success, Long Beach, Lynbrook, Malverne, Old Westbury, Oyster Bay Cove, Port Washington, and Rockville Centre will all be participating in the campaign.
