Organizations seeking donations, volunteers for longtime park centerpiece
The Kiwanis Foundation of Hicksville and the Hicksville Chamber of Commerce have announced that the two organizations will coordinate the replacement of the Hicksville Memorial Fountain that was built with donations from Hicksville residents, businesses and friends of Hicksville and originally dedicated in 1979.
There was a renovation and rededication of the fountain in 1998 and the fountain has been a centerpiece in Kennedy Park on Broadway and Jerusalem Ave for the past 33 years.
The fountain will be rebuilt using up-to-date materials, wiring and pumps that will require less maintenance and will be more energy efficient. A volunteer group from the chamber, led by Jim Pavone – who built the train that stands at Kennedy Park – recently took down the fountain when it was realized the structure was beyond repair.
There have already been donations of material and volunteer labor, while engraved brick-style pavers that will be placed around the fountain are also available with a family name or special message at a donation of $100 for each paver.
“Commonly referred to as the most well-maintained and beautiful spots to see in Hicksville, Kennedy Memorial Park and its Foley Gardens (appropriately named for Mr. William Foley) are the recipients of hundreds of complimentary calls and letters from appreciative visitors from both near and far,” said a representative from the Hicksville Chamber of Commerce.
Foley, a longtime resident and active community member, has handled park maintenance for more than 10 years. He is also a member of the Hicksville Fire Department and Chamber of Commerce.
Monetary donations for the fountain project and the engraved pavers are being accepted by the Kiwanis Foundation of Hicksville, Inc., PO Box 772, Hicksville, N.Y. 11802. Donations can also be delivered to the Hicksville Chamber office at 10 West Marie Street, Hicksville, N.Y. All checks are to be payable to the Kiwanis Foundation of Hicksville, Inc.
