Long Island Rail Road riders will have two months instead of two weeks to use tickets before they expire beginning Sept. 4.
Transit officials attributed the move to complaints received from commuters and elected officials after the expiration time period of train tickets was shortened in 2010 from six months.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority had cut ticket expiration dates to cut losses from uncollected tickets. The MTA board approved the new expiration timetables at their July 23 meeting.
The revised expiration dates cover one-way and round-trip tickets. Ten-trip tickets will remain valid for six months.
The refund period will also be extended from one to two months, although there will still be a $10 processing fee for refunds.
Railroad officials anticipate a $6 million loss from the new expiration times.
