Cops: Williston Park Man Shot Girlfriend Over Zombies

A suspected gunman was ordered held without bail after Nassau County police said he shot his girlfriend in the back during an argument over zombies outside of his Williston Park home early Tuesday morning.

Jared Gurman was charged with second-degree attempted murder and was remanded at Nassau County jail until his next court date Thursday. His attorney told reporters that the shooting was an accident, but police maintain it was intentional.

“He raised the rifle, pointed it at her and the rifle went off,” said Det. Lt. Raymond Cote. “He has told us that he pointed the weapon at her and fired.”

Police said the victim, whose name is being withheld, picked up her boyfriend of more than four years from the bar and was taking him back to his apartment when they began arguing about the AMC show “The Walking Dead.”

“Gurman had had a few drinks, but was lucid,” said Cote. “He’s remorseful about what happened, but at the time he was very angry.”

Gurman was arguing that there is a possibility of a zombie virus being released by the government, according to Cote. After she dropped him off, they continued to argue via text message, when the woman decided to go back to calm her boyfriend down.

When she arrived and tried to walk inside, he shot her, police said. After the shooting, the woman pleaded with Gorman to take her to the hospital.

He took her to a hospital where doctors could not stop the bleeding and transferred to another hospital where Gorman was arrested.

The victim is being treated for a pierced lung, pierced diaphragm and a shattered rib, police said. She is in serious but stable condition.
