Needs Assessment Survey Mailings Continue
Mailings are ongoing to all village residents for the Community wide Recreation and Parks Needs Assessment survey.
This is your opportunity to express your individual needs, attitudes, opinions and behaviors toward village leisure services and facilities.
When you receive your questionnaire, complete it and return it to the consulting firm in the envelope provided. Note: space has been provided for write in comments. Feel free to use these areas to express other specific concerns or recommendations.

Spring Children’s Yoga
Certified yoga instructor Connie McKnight has designed youth yoga classes for ages 6-9. Each class in this 6-week session is one hour long. All classes are held at St. Paul’s Senior Center and will begin the week of May 9. Any resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City in this age group is invited to join these relaxing classes.
The course schedule is as follows:
Thursdays at 4:15 p.m., beginning on May 9. Six classes for $42.

Baseball Skills Competition At Grove Park
The Recreation and Parks Department will again run the local level of Major League Baseball’s Pitch, Hit and Run competition. This event will be held at Grove Park at 4 p.m. on May 16 with a raindate of May 23. Garden City residents ages 7–14 are invited to come down and participate in this free program. This is open to both boys and girls. Age is determined as of July 17, 2013. Winners have a chance to participate in the sectional level to be held at a later date. The program is free but pre-registration is necessary by May 15. To register, please visit the recreation office at 108 Rockaway Ave.
Over 35 Softball Application Packets
Registration packets are available for joining the recreation department’s over 35 Men’s softball league. This league is played on Sunday evenings beginning late May and continuing throughout the summer. Players must be 35 years old or older by the start of the league and residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. To pick up a packet, please visit the recreation department’s office at 108 Rockaway Ave. All packets must be returned by May 14 in order to be considered.
Want To Play Some Softball?
If you are a resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City, age 18 or over, who would like to play softball in one of the recreation department’s softball leagues, call the recreation office at 516-465-4075 to put your name on the “player list.” Coaches sometimes call looking for extra players to round out their rosters. Call and leave your name, age, address, and phone number and your name will be kept on file for a team looking for extra players.
USSI Field Hockey Camp
US Sports Institute will conduct a Summer Field Hockey Camp for girls ages 9-13 that are residents of the Village of Garden City. Campers will be taken through all phases of the game, thoughtfully integrating technical and tactical components in a fun, innovative way. The camp will focus on individual skill development and the rules of the game, as well as the importance of playing together as a team. Players will be grouped by age, playing ability and experience level. No previous experience playing field hockey is required to attend the First Play Field Hockey Camp. Equipment will be supplied.

Week of Aug. 19-22

Time: 9:30–12:30 p.m.

US Sports Institute Multi-Sport Camp For Ages 5-12
The recreation department is pleased to work in conjunction with the US Sports Institute to offer several programs this summer. Experience many different sports in one week in a fun and exciting setting at the Multi-Sport Camp. Instruction will be given in each sport culminating in a game situation. After a half hour lunch break, the children will return to participate in USSI’s “Olympic Games” and World Cup. Participants in the full-day camp will receive all of the above plus several additional sports and challenges.
The camp will be held at St. Paul’s and is divided into a half or full day camp as follows:
Multi Sports (also called Total Sports)
Week of June 24-27
Half-day morning camp for ages 5–12 (9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.)
Cost: $140
Half-day afternoon camp for ages 5–12 (1 to 4 p.m.)
Cost: – $90
Full-day camp for ages 6–12 (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
Cost: – $165
Please note-this camp, (week of June 24), will add Friday to their schedule if they experience inclement weather during the program week.
Multi-Sports (also called Total Sports)
Week of Aug. 12-15
Half-day morning camp for ages 5–12 (9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.)

US Sports Institute Soccer Camp For Ages 5-13
A Sports Institute’s Soccer Camp will also be offered this summer. This program is broken into two divisions:
First Play Soccer Camp
This soccer day camp pushes the fun factor for children ages 5 to 12 while improving their soccer skills. Each child will be assigned a World Cup country for the week. They will then learn soccer skills from a different country each day and put them to the test with fun challenges and games.
Premier Play Soccer Camp
Premier Play–Where Champions are made. This unique day camp gives travel soccer players ages 8–13 training just like the youth development academies in Europe without having to leave home. During the week, players will enjoy various soccer activities used by professional clubs including speed and agility training, and small-sided futsal sessions. Players will also perform daily skills challenges and complete a personal progress report for the week. Official scrimmages will be played under the guidance of US Sport Institute’s professional coaches, ensuring the player’s understanding the tactics of soccer. While this camp is geared for the serious player, the emphasis is on learning in an enjoyable environment that promotes self-confidence.

Youth Basketball Camp
The Garden City Recreation Department will be conducting a youth basketball camp for boys and girls who are residents of the Incorporated Village of Garden City and entering 1st through 6th grades in September. Come join up and learn what it takes to pass, dribble and shoot in this camp. The purpose of this program is to provide instruction in self improvement, basketball fundamentals, team play, group cooperation, and most important of all, FUN! !
