Editorial: True Scholar Athletes

According to the results of a 2011 NCAA study, 82 percent of all student athletes graduated with a degree. Which makes what the Garden City School District Athletic program does year in and year out all the more impressive. At the recent G.A.A.-B.A.A. Awards dinner, it was announced that for the seventh consecutive year, the Garden City High School had received the Scholar/Athlete Team School of Distinction Award from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA). To qualify, each of the high school’s 32 varsity teams needed to achieve a collective average GPA of 90 or higher. And aside from myriad championships and individual triumphs, this kind of intellectual achievement coupled with athletic success is the kind of model that should be the norm and not the exception. And to that end, the Garden City High School athletic program has done an exemplary job of living up to the ancient Greek idea that a sound mind and body are the paths to success.
