For the seventh consecutive year, the North Shore Kayak Club, which is based in Port Washington, will participate in the American Littoral Society national coastal cleanup. It is scheduled this year for Saturday, September 21, at 10 a.m.
Members of the public are invited to join kayak club members in their clean-up efforts on Leeds Pond Beach in Plandome. The clean-up is timed to begin shortly after low tide on Manhasset Bay, when the most amount of land mass on the beach is exposed. As the refuse is removed and bagged, it will be cataloged; and the results are forwarded to the American Littoral Society which tracks coastal trash data nationwide.
Trash removal and cataloging will be accomplished in teams of two and three; with data sheets, gloves and trash bags provided by the kayak club.
Clean-up site co-captains, kayak club members Jim Roman and Pat Valente, said in a joint statement: “Our waterways are meant to be enjoyed for their serenity and natural beauty.”
Any litter dumped locally on the North Shore on beaches, tossed off of boats, thrown into the street or down storm drains, eventually travels into the Sound.
The kayak club asks participants either walk or travel by non-motorized boat to Leeds Pond Beach to help reduce their carbon footprint. However, limited parking is available in nearby neighborhoods. For further information about the beach clean-up, please contact (917) 626-4808 or (917) 400-7041.
