Communication was the key word during a visit by the Islanders hockey team to Abbey Lane Elementary School.
“It’s important to be a team not only on the ice but off the ice,” Islanders defenseman Brian Strait told Levittown students. “You become friends with your teammates and have a sense of protection for one another on the ice.”
During the district’s annual LEADD Week (Levittown Educators Against Destructive Decisions), students and staff listened carefully to arena hostess Dina Tsiorvas and ice girl Ashleen Betts speak about ways to better communicate with one another, thereby limiting bullying on school campuses.
“Anyone can be a leader, even if you don’t have the letter on your jersey you are still a leader if you chose to be,” shared Forward Peter Regin. Strait added, “What makes a good leader is someone who leads by example and is there for the team.”
To the delight of the students, Islanders mascot Sparky also joined in on a couple of fun games to promote exercise, healthy eating and teamwork.
Strait also told the Levittown Tribune, “It’s really exciting for us to come here and talk to the kids, it feels like just yesterday I was sitting and listening to people talk about how to achieve my dreams; I love coming out and supporting the community its nice to get to know them.”
