Karen G. Andreasian of Great Neck died on Aug. 7 after a long struggle with a brain tumor.
For over 20 years, Karen worked as an attorney with the state Mental Hygiene Legal Service in Manhattan, improving the lives of many. Her agency represents the committed mentally ill and she was truly dedicated to preserving her clients’ rights. To her colleagues she was highly regarded as an invaluable source to those seeking enlightenment and guidance as to the rights and remedies of the mentally ill. She never forgot that her job was to preserve the constitutional rights of people who could not defend themselves. Despite her illness, she continued to work for them until the day she was admitted to the hospital.
Prior to MHLS, she was an assistant district attorney in the Brooklyn DA’s office.
In addition to maintaining her service to her profession, Karen’s love for life endured even as she waged battle with her illness. For as long as her condition allowed, she steadfastly pursued her personal passions for ballet lessons, horseback riding and commissioning bespoke clothing for every season. She was a tireless advocate for animal rights and had an abiding and intense love for animals. Because of this, the family has requested that donations may be made to her memory to Little Shelter Animal Rescue and Adoption Center in Huntington.
She is survived by her loving husband Peter, her heartbroken parents Jean Falzon and Louis Gomes, and her brother Stephen Gomes. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
