Letters To Santa

It’s time to send letters to Santa and the recreation department will speed up the process. A special Santa’s Mailbox will be set up in the waiting area of the recreation department’s administrative offices at 108 Rockaway Ave. beginning Dec. 2. Children can drop their letters in the mailbox and Santa will send them a personalized reply. Santa’s mailbox will be available through Dec. 20.

Christmas Candy Contest

In addition to sending their letters to Santa, kids can take a chance at guessing the number of candy pieces in the jar next to Santa’s Mailbox and the child whose guess is closest to the actual number will win the jar, candy and all. The candy contest will be available through Dec. 20.

A Visit From Santa

Santa will visit the recreation office at 108 Rockaway Ave. for visits and photos on Dec. 19 from 3-4:15 p.m. The recreation department staff will be available to take and print photos. There is no fee for a photo but a donation of a small gift for Toys for Tots would be appreciated.

Garden City Pool Interviews For 2014 Season

The department of recreation and parks will be holding interviews for prospective pool employees (you must be a graduating high school senior or older) for the upcoming 2014 season on the following dates:

Thursday, Dec. 19; Thursday, Dec. 26; Wednesday, Jan. 8; Thursday, Jan. 9; Friday, Jan. 10; Saturday, Jan. 11; Wednesday, Jan. 15; Friday, Jan. 17

Between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

All former and prospective employees must interview if they are planning to work at the pool next season. Please pick up an application and sign up for your interview in the recreation office at 108 Rockaway Ave. For more information call 516-465-4075.

Bricks4Kidz – A Lego Experience For Grades K – 3

The Garden City Department of Recreation and Parks is happy to announce registration for the start of the Winter Bricks4Kidz After School Program.  Children in grades k–3 will use Legos to sample models from over two dozen different themes such as Super Hero Academy, Amusement Park, Mindstorm Robotics and Space Adventures. This program is open to children in grades k-3 who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. Classes will be held on Mondays or Fridays at 4 p.m. and will begin the week of Jan. 13. The cost will be $135.

Bricks4kidz Robotics For Grades 3-6

The Garden City Department of Recreation and Parks is happy to announce registration for the start of the Winter Bricks4Kidz Robotics Program.  

Children will use Lego blocks and collaborate with each other to learn mechanical design, construction and programming is a fun setting. Classes are one hour in length and will be held in an eight-week session. This program is open to children in grades 3 6 who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. Classes will be held on Mondays at 5 p.m. and will begin the week of Jan. 13. The cost will be $135.

Adult Zumba In Cluett Hall

The following Winter Zumba exercise classes for adults will be offered by the department of recreation and parks beginning the week of Jan. 6:

Monday evenings at 7:45 p.m. 10 weeks for $90

Monday mornings at 9:15 a.m. 10 weeks for $90

Saturday mornings at 9:15 a.m. 10 weeks for $90

All classes will be held in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall.

Classes are lead by Felicia Lovaglio, dance conservatory director and adjunct professor at Adelphi. Each class is 45 minutes long.

Zumba Gold For The Active Senior Or Beginner

Winter Zumba Gold classes will be held in St. Paul’s Senior Center on Monday evenings at 6:30 p.m. or Thursday afternoons at 1 p.m. Each 45-minute class, teaching the basics of Zumba, is led by certified Zumba instructor Felicia Lovaglio. This class is geared for seniors or the beginner adult. Classes will begin the week of Jan. 6.

Monday at 6:30 p.m. Seniors (65 or older)- $50; Others – $90

Thursdays at 2 p.m. Seniors – $50; Others – $90

Registration For Adult Yoga

Certified yoga instructor Connie McKnight has designed adult yoga classes with all ages in mind. Each class in these 10-week sessions is one hour long. The cost of this program will be $65. Any resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City is invited to join these relaxing classes.

The course schedule is as follows:

Yoga for All – Mondays at 7:30 p.m. in St. Paul’s Senior Center        

Intermediate Yoga – Wednesdays at 10:15 a.m. in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall

Beginner Yoga – Wednesdays at 9 a.m. in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall

Classes begin the week of Jan. 6. To register for any of these classes, visit the Recreation Office at 108 Rockaway Ave.

After School Gym Program For Grades K To 6

The Garden City Recreation Department is pleased to announce that this winter, the recreation staff will conduct a gym program for children in grades K – 6. This free program will consist of organized games and activities in a supervised setting. It runs by grade levels in St. Paul’s Field House beginning the week of Dec. 2 through Feb. 14 according to the following schedule:

Grades 2-3 Mondays from 3:30 – 5:45 p.m.

Grades K-1 Wednesdays from 3:30 – 5 p.m.

Grades 4-6 Fridays from 3:30 – 5:45 p.m.

Sneakers must be worn for any activity in the field house.

Note-Once the children are in our facility, they will not be allowed to leave unless accompanied by an adult. Please come into the building to pick up your child and please be prompt .

Floor Hockey Registration Begins

The Garden City Department of Recreation and Parks will again offer a floor hockey program this at St. Paul’s Field House. The program will be open to village residents in grades K through 6 on Fridays and began Dec. 4 according to the following schedule:

Grades K – 3: 6:15 to 7:15 p.m.

Grades 4 – 6: 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The cost of this six-week program will be $30. To register, please download an application off our website at www.gardencityrecreation.org or visit the recreation office at 108 Rockaway Ave.

Please note: All participants are required to wear the following equipment at all times- Hockey helmet with cage, hockey gloves, shin pads, sneakers and hockey stick

Long Island Chorale Society — Messiah At Adelphi

The recreation and parks department has secured discounted tickets to the Long Island Chorale Society’s performance of Messiah at Adelphi University’s Performing Arts Center on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 8 p.m. This trip is on your own and tickets can be purchased by Garden City residents at the recreation office (108 Rockaway Ave.) for the following prices:

Adults — $15 Seniors — $5

To purchase tickets for this event, please visit the office at 108 Rockaway Ave. and make checks payable to Long Island Chorale Society.

These programs are open to residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City who have graduated high school. All programs listed are free of charge and strictly “pick up.” A picture ID is required to sign in to any program. For further information, please contact the recreation office at 516-465-4075.
