Great Neck Scouts At Udalls Cove

scoutsOver the past months, a number of Eagle Scout candidates from Great Neck’s Scout Troop 10 have applied their community leadership service projects (a requirement for Eagle rank) to help restore Udalls Cove, a project to reclaim the nature preserve encompassing parts of Great Neck Estates and Little Neck, Queens.

With the approval and guidance of Walter Mugdan, president of the Udalls Cove Preservation Society, the Scouts independently recruited parents, fellow Scouts, siblings and friends to form work crews for each project. Among the accomplishments are new and reclaimed footpaths, new footbridges over waterways, and a cleanup of overgrown areas. Udalls Cove is a rare oasis in a busy residential area, home to a large variety of small wildlife and birdlife, including hawks, egrets and falcons. The eventual objective is to have Udalls Cove become a viable parkland to be enjoyed and appreciated by local nature lovers.
