A Brookville teen and his mother were arrested on Feb. 11, after police say the 17-year-old Jericho High School student illegally bought a handgun days before.
Police say David J. Yablans bought a .32 caliber handgun from 16-year-old Ryan P. Oliverio of Levittown on Feb. 8.
Oliverio was walking on Frost Street and Old Country Road in New Cassel when police say they observed a handgun sticking out of his pocket. They found Oliverio with an unlicensed .380 caliber handgun and 15 small and 3 medium bags of marijuana.
During the investigation, Oliverio allegedly told police he had sold a gun to Yablans. Oliverio was arrested and police went to the Yablans’ Old Cedar Swamp Road residence at 9:40 p.m. to recover the gun.
Police say Yablans admitted to having the gun but said his mother Linda Yablans, 51, took it away from him.
Linda Yablans was opening the safe where the illegal handgun was kept, when police say she failed to follow orders not to touch any contents and step away from the safe, lunging forward and grabbing the handgun. After a struggle, officers removed the gun from her hand and placed her under arrest.
Oliverio is charged with criminal possession of a weapon, sale of a firearm and criminal possession of marijuana. David Yablans is charged with criminal possession of a weapon. Linda Yablans is charged with criminal possession of a weapon and obstructing governmental administration.
