The Belle of Amherst, a one-woman play about the poet Emily Dickinson performed by actress Melanie Lipton, will be the centerpiece of a Friends of the Library program to honor the late Professor Edmund L. Epstein on Sunday, March 16, at 3 p.m. in the library’s Lapham meeting room.
Set in Dickinson’s Amherst home, the play, by author William Luce, draws extensively on Dickinson’s poems and letters. Dickinson produced poems that are considered transcendental, forming a bridge between the poetic conventions of the eighteenth century and modern American poetry.
Professor Edmund Epstein, a Port resident who died in 2012, was an internationally known literary scholar who gave frequent lectures at the library and whose family has lent its support to The Belle of Amherst program.
