It wasn’t enough to break a long-standing school record. They had to do it again the next year.
Four Port Washington students; Neve Devine, Joelle Feinberg, Jenny Aguilar (girls team) and James Burns (boys team) participated at the NYS Meet on March 1, at Cornell University.
Head Coach Jeremiah Pope is extremely proud of his athletes and says they have excelled in their track careers.
Feinberg is a senior and four-year member of the varsity team. She quit soccer in ninth grade when Pope urged her to concentrate at one sport.
“I told her you can’t do both,” he said. “I’ll train you at track, but it’s got to be one.”
He added that she has gone on to become “one of the most feared runners in the county.”
Feinberg has been heavily recruited among college coaches and has decided to attend the prestigious Brown University over other Ivy League schools such as Cornell.
This was her third trip to the state tournament, and she holds every school record in the events she competes in. Upon breaking the school record once, she broke it again the next year—including running a 5:01 mile. She was be the anchor during the intersectional relay, and she came in fifth in New York and six in the federation.
Neve Devine is a junior and also in her fourth year with varsity. This was her third time competing in the state tournament in the high jump. She placed in the top 18 in the state.
She has earned All-Conference, All-County and All-Long Island in the previous two years. She is ranked No. 1 in the county and has also broken the school record twice, with her jumps of 5’3” and 5’4”. After the meet she will be competing in the New Balance Indoor Nationals against the best jumpers in the nation.
Jenny Aguilar is also a junior and in her fourth year with the club. She made her second trip to the state tournament and finished in the top 24 in the state. Her accolades include All-Division, All-Conference and All-County.
She is ranked No. 1 in the county for the 300m dash. She owns the school record, which was previously held by Karen Skinner. She anchored the 4x100m and 4x200m which earned the school a conference championship.
James Burns represented the boys team in the state tournament in the 55m high hurdles. He did a great job, finishing in fourth in the state.
All the athletes have done a tremendous job of representing their high school, and have put in an inordinate amount of work to reach this point.
