Roslyn High School’s DECA operated school store achieved Gold Certification for 2014. It is only one of 221 school stores in the nation to receive this honor.
According to Roslyn Business Teacher Sally Kaufman, The School Business Enterprise (“SBE”) Certification program provides SBEs with standards for model school store operation and provides recognition for outstanding achievement at three levels: bronze, silver and gold. The purpose of an SBE is to give students an opportunity to run a real business.
Roslyn High School was one of only two schools in New York State to be awarded a Gold certification. This is the first time Roslyn DECA has applied. Jared Faust, Emily Hason and Jerry Li created the SBE Manual according to the National DECA guidelines. The 38-page manual includes sections on Marketing, Finance, Operations, Human Resources, Inventory Management, and other business segments. From new employee training to pricing merchandise, students must apply what they have learned through classwork and their DECA experience in order to write a successful manual.
As a result of their work, Jared, Jerry and Emily have been invited to a special National competition against other gold certified stores in Atlanta this May, and will also share their best practices on the topic of Product/Service Management.
Sally Kaufman and the students were honored at the Board of Education meeting on Thursday, March 20.
