Ellen Grossman of Great Neck did something special for her birthday this year. For the fourth year in a row, she celebrated her birthday by gathering 20 of her best friends to serve a pre-Passover Seder to 100 Holocaust survivors. The Seder, held at the Barry and Florence Friedberg Jewish Community Center in Oceanside on Wednesday, March 26, was, as always, was presented by the UJA-Federation.
Each year, UJA-Federation volunteer Grossman sponsors the seder for Selfhelp Community Services, Inc.’s Nassau Holocaust Survivor Program. She is recognized as a dedicated UJA-Federation volunteer and leader and considers this experience to be an outgrowth of her involvement with UJA. For her, it is a way of giving back after she had celebated “a big birthday.” Grossman has no personal connection to the Holocaust, but wants to be one who insures that this never happens again.
Each year the recipients of the Seder look forward to this now annual tradition, where they meet new friends and are embraced by this group of local women. Among those women volunteering this year were Grossman’s good friends Laura Wein, Marilyn Gessin, Edith Weisfeld and Freddi Kadden.
Close to 100 Holocaust survivors from all parts of Nassau County gathered for this year’s pre-Passover Seder celebration.
The Seder was led by a local cantor and featured traditional prayers and songs.
