Letter: Budget, Bond, And Congratulations

Thank you for coming out in what appears to be a resounding vote of approval for the Herricks School District’s budget and bond. On a sun filled spring day, so many came out to cast a vote of support for a Budget that met the financial requirements of the state, and a fiscally responsible bond that will continue to provide improvements in the structures and surrounding s of our buildings.

The five members of the Board of Education are humbled at the overwhelming support offered by the voters and all our dear friends in this great community. By a margin of 2 to 1, voters approved the ballot proposals, Budget: Yes 1,378, No  696, Bond approved: Yes 1,105, No 557, as well as the re-election of Christine Turner to begin her ninth term on the board, and Jim Gounaris for a second term. The board stands ready to serve and do the best job possible for all the residents but we can’t do it alone. We want to encourage all of you to come and take part in the process, attend the board of education meetings and advocate on behalf of the students, families and residents who make up our great district.

We would also like to offer our deepest congratulatory remarks for our esteemed Superintendent Dr. John Bierwirth, our wonderful Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Dr. Deirdre Hayes, and for our High School Principal Dr. Jane Modoono. All three have informed the board of their retirement. Both Dr. Bierwirth and Modoono will be ending their tenure with us on June 30, 2015, and Dr. Hayes on Dec. 31, 2014. Their long tenure during turbulent times helped keep Herricks steady and ensured that the Districts educational excellence was preserved and consistent with traditions of the past. They will be missed immensely by our students, staff and family residents.

To ensure that our continued path forward is progressive and positive, the board is currently interviewing search firms and will be proactive in finding the best individuals to replace them, people of Herricks caliber, as we know the community would expect no less.
