Merchants Clean Up

The village has received quite a few complaints over the past few weeks regarding the amount of wrappers, waste, bottles and cans that are on Seventh Street. I would like to remind the merchants to be more careful in how they place their garbage for pickup. I would also like to remind the shoppers to please dispose of their waste in the containers that are located along Seventh Street. If you feel that there are not enough receptacles available for the trash, please call my office at 516-465-4051 to let me know where you feel that additional containers should be placed.

Backflow Tests Mandatory For Lawn Irrigation Systems

I would like to remind everyone that has an automatic lawn sprinkler system, that your backflow prevention assembly unit must be tested annually, as mandated by the Nassau County Health Department.

Notification letters are sent prior to the anniversary of the last test to reach out and alert residents that their device is due to be tested again. The Nassau County Health Department has mandated all devices must be tested annually and has designated the water purveyor, (Village of Garden City) responsible for enforcement. The health department considers all untested devices a hazardous threat to the water supply. As such, they have given the authority to the village, to shut off water services to residences that do not conform. In addition, the Village risks incurring a fine by the Nassau County Health Department which would be passed on to the residences.

If you have any questions or need a list of certified backflow testers, please do not hesitate to call Ruth Ann Brennan of the Garden City Water Department at 516-465-4160.

Garage Sales—Local Law 3-1979

As a reminder to residents who are contemplating garage sales, the village has a local law which applies to individual homeowners, as well as organizations, for the purpose of preventing such sales from becoming a blemish on our community either by frequency or by the manner in which they are conducted. The regulations may be obtained in detail at the Village Hall, but in general they cover the following:

1. A permit to conduct such sales at a fee of $30 to be obtained at least five business days prior to the date of the sale from the business office at village hall.

2. Not more than one permit may be issued to a person at one location during a 12-month period except that a second sale may be held immediately preceding the sale of an owner’s property.

3. The sale is limited to three consecutive days, excluding Sundays and legal holidays.

4. The hours of the sale shall be between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

5. Property offered for sale may be displayed only within the interior of the residence or to the rear of the front building line of such residence.

6. The property being sold must be owned by the persons conducting the sale.

7. One sign, not larger than two feet square, may be displayed on property not more than 24 hours prior to the sale and must be removed within 24 hours after completion of the sale.

8. Sales postponed because of inclement weather may be held after issue of another permit by the village clerk within 30 days of the initial date, without payment of an additional fee.

Shop Locally

Please continue to support the local merchants and I look forward to seeing everyone in town.

Board Of Trustees Meeting

The next meetings of the board of trustees will be Thursday, June 5 and Thursday, June 19 at 8 p.m. I encourage all residents to attend board of trustees meetings so as to be thoroughly informed of village issues from a first-hand perspective.
